An important aspect to consider is that competing has its own skillset. This skill takes time to develop alongside the skills in BJJ (Brazilian jiu jitsu) itself. Here’s some pointers and truths to help you out.
Being able to control your stress levels and implement your game whilst having an adrenaline dump, facing an opponent in front of an audience is a skill and something that you can develop! The truth is, (being someone that has competed a good fair few times) this is an ongoing battle, where sometimes you will feel it more than others. The more you do it and put yourself in these situations the better you will get and develop competing as a skill.
Being prepared and reducing the stress on the day. Signing up for the right weight category and
Training with a competition mindset and understanding the rules is key with any martial art or sport..
Knowing when to rest, control or when to fight for the position – For example, if you fight for a guard pass and initially get it, try to advance straight away, which allows the opponent recover some sort of guard. The reality is that you have just wasted that energy and potentially given your opponent positive reassurance and given yourself doubt. This might sound extreme but when you are having an adrenaline dump and feeling the pressure, these thoughts have a tendency to sneak in. Once you get the pass, you must establish the control and collect your points before progressing to the next point scoring or submission opportunity. This attitude and mentality can be replicated in drilling and sparring.
