What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ, or simply Jiu Jitsu) is a ground fighting martial art that specialises in joint locks and chokes to secure a victory over your opponent, known as a ‘tap’. BJJ helps smaller opponents defeat larger opponents using leverage, tactics and technique rather than strength and power.
Once you and/or your opponent are on the ground, there are a number of manoeuvres and counter-manoeuvres available to control your opponent, secure a dominant position and apply a submission. These techniques include passing guard to defend and attack from the bottom, mount, side and the back, and locking in submissions like guillotines, armbars, triangle chokes, rear naked chokes and leg locks.
Sparring (commonly referred to as ‘rolling’) and live drilling play a vital role in training. Performance in drilling, sparring and competition, as well as attendance, are crucial for progressing through belts and grades.
