Get the kids listening . “Change direction” 1 left 2 right. Reaction time from commas to response.

Warm up techniques to practice common movements found when performing Jiu-jitsu.

A forward roll simulates the reaction or result of being thrown. We roll over the shoulder as appose to the head and neck to avoid severe damage or injury being inflicted. We then add the use of the break fall. this will disperse the impact of the throw into the mat to again reduce the risk of injury.  Adding a simple technique like a forward roll as part of a warm will then build an automated response or muscle memory. So when the child is thrown or falls, they will respond appropriately.

Technique. Get it right! Nothing worse than moving on with a position and none of the kids can follow the next step. Kids(just like adults) will learn and develop at different rates. Don’t worry about one kid spending too long on the same technique because another kid is struggling. Help them improve on what they already know. I am always self critiquing and trying to improve my own techniques, even those of the most basic.
