Training BJJ can be a frustrating journey, where everybody goes through ups, downs and themselves suffering long plateaus.

A massive learning curve for me (I am not alone with this) was leaving your “A Game” for the right time and the right sessions.

Practice what you learn! What’s the point of learning and drilling new skills, but never trying to implement them in your sparring? We use positional/specific training to focus on the subject learnt in that session for this reason. It’s easy to always stray back to your “A Game”. If we are all honest, we all do it. It’s like  breaking a bad a habit.

Next time you catch yourself in autopilot following your favourite sequences or technique, make a conscious effort to come out of your comfort zone. If you don’t focus away from your “A game”. Not only will you prevent yourself from learning new skills effectively, your, so called “A Game” will stay exactly the same and not develop.

Our goal and the reason we never stop training, is that we want to keep learning and have an all round game. Not just have a singular dimension “A Game”.

Time to add layers to your “A Game” and develop it. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not suggesting to never use your A Game. Save this for competition rounds or sometimes if you just want to, or feel like it. Now and then you will recognise the changes and development of your game. The is an awesome feeling!
